How to remove the SIM card in an iPhone. The SIM card is located inside of a special tray that can be pulled free from your iPhone using a special SIM eject tool.

If you don’t have the tool, you can use a paperclip, thumbtack, safety pin, or another small, pointed object around the house. Once the tray is removed, you can easily remove the SIM card and insert a new one.

What you need to remove the SIM card in your iPhone or iPad

An Apple SIM card remover tool is all that is required for you to remove the SIM card that is installed in either your iPhone or iPad (this is included in the original box in some countries, especially when you buy an unlocked device).

However, a small paper clip that has been bent in half, similar to the one shown above, will also do the trick.

If you are going to be utilizing a paper clip, you should straighten the long end so that it protrudes (see the photo above).

Whether you are going to use something different, such as the tip of a little screwdriver, check to see if it will fit into the slot for ejecting the SIM card. You don’t want to mangle your device.

Find where your SIM tray is located on your iPhone or iPad model

Almost all iPhones come standard with a SIM card tray; if you have an iPhone 4s or later, the tray has been replaced by a slot for SIM cards. The one and only exception was the iPhone 4 model that was compatible with CDMA networks.

Here is where you can find it, given your iPhone model:

Original iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS: On the top of the iPhone, between the power button and the headphone jack. iPhone 4: On the left side of the iPhone, between the volume buttons.
From the iPhone 4s onward, look on the right side of the device, on the side of the iPhone that is opposite the mute switch and the volume buttons.
On the left side of the iPhone, between the volume buttons and the mute switch, beginning with the iPhone 12 and continuing with the iPhone 14.

Note that the only kind of iPhones that do not come with SIM card slots are the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models that are purchased in the United States. Instead of SIM cards, they use eSIMs.

SIM card slots can only be found on iPads that support cellular connectivity. If you have a mobile phone, the SIM tray can be found at the following location:

Original iPad: Along the left side of the iPad towards the center, opposite the side of the iPad that has the mute switch and the volume controls, at the bottom of the device.
iPad 2/3/4:
Near the top of the iPad’s left side, directly across from the side that houses the mute switch and volume buttons.
iPad 5/6/7/8/9, as well as iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini, across all generations:
On the bottom right edge of the iPad, which is the same side as the mute switch and the volume buttons.

How to remove the SIM card in an iPhone or iPad

  • Gently insert the small paperclip you bent earlier into the small pinhole opening in the SIM tray.
  • Apply a small amount of pressure until the SIM tray pops out of the iPhone or iPad. Don’t apply pressure at an angle, only in the direction of the pin hole.
  • Grab hold of the SIM tray and pull straight out.
  • Swap your SIM card. Make sure you have installed the SIM in the correct orientation by aligning the notched corners on the card.
  • Re-insert the tray. Make sure you are inserting the SIM tray in the correct orientation.

Note: If you are using an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR from Mainland China with dual nano-SIM cards, the cards should only fit one way because they are located on each side of the SIM tray. This is because the tray can only accommodate the cards in one orientation.

It is imperative that you keep in mind that you should never try to force a SIM tray back into its slot. Broken pins on the logic board can render your iPhone or iPad unable to connect to any cellular network. This can happen if you drop or otherwise damage the device.

Always check to ensure that the SIM card is inserted into the tray properly and that it is reinserted into your iPhone or iPad in the right direction before using it. The pin hole is a simple method that can be used to ensure accuracy. Because of this, you may rest assured that you are inserting it properly.
