Sundowns have won the Premier League championship a record 12 times since its introduction in 1996, as well as three National Soccer League Championships and a total of 15 league titles. It is now the most successful football team in the South African Premier Soccer League era. They won the 2016 CAF Champions League, the 2017 CAF Super Cup, and were named CAF Club of the Year in 2016. They have also won the Nedbank Cup six times, the MTN 8 four times, and the Telkom Knockout four times in South Africa. They are the first South African team to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, finishing sixth.

Sundowns is owned by Patrice Motsepe, a South African business billionaire, and is one of the most valuable clubs in Africa in terms of market value.

The club’s nickname, The Brazilians, refers to their blue and yellow soccer uniform, which is similar to that of the Brazilian National Team. The team takes pride in its distinct offensive style, colloquially termed “Shoe Shine & Piano,” which consists of rapid, short passes on the ground and is similar to Spanish Tiki-taka. This style of play has been replicated in its Youth teams and Women’s football team over the years. Sundowns became Africa’s first club to win both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021.

Mamelodi Sundowns History

The Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club was established in the Marabastad neighborhood, which is located to the north-west of the Pretoria central business district.

In the early 1960s, a group of friends, among whom were philanthropist and businessman Fish Kekana, Dr. Motsiri Itsweng, and Dr. Bonnie Sebotsane, established what would later become an official football club in 1970.

In 1973, the team became a member of the Federation Professional Football League. That same year, they advanced all the way to the championship game of the Coca-Cola Cup, where they faced off against Berea United and were ultimately defeated 5–3.

In 1978, the Federation Professional League showed their support for the National Professional Football League, which was known as NPFL at the time. This resulted in the dissolution of the Federation Professional League and, as a direct consequence of this, Sundowns were demoted to the second tier.

During the time when ‘Downs struggled to be promoted, the management of Sundowns considered disbanding the club. Instead of disbanding the club, ‘Downs moved to Mamelodi in the early 1980s. This decision was made during the time that ‘Downs struggled to get promoted.

In 1985, South African football became the first sport in the world to abolish racial segregation, and the same year, the country’s most successful clubs came together to establish the National Soccer League.

In 1983, Sundowns were awarded promotion to the NPSL. However, during their first season playing in the top division of football, they struggled to compete well. This continued until Zola Mahobe joined the club in 1985 and selected Ben Segale as their head coach. As soon as Mahobe took over as Sundowns’ owner, the club’s fortunes began to turn around for the better, and they started to compete for first place in the domestic competition. In an effort to achieve dominance in South African football, the head coach of the lavishly spent Sundowns club secured the services of some of the country’s best players. Mahobe traveled to Soweto with the intention of hiring the highly regarded coach Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala, who was aiding Blackpool at the time, to steer the ambitious Sundowns club. Blackpool was Mahobe’s current employer. Sundowns played a brand of football under the direction of Screamer Tshabalala that was both entertaining and effective. This style of play earned the team the nickname “The Shoe Shine and Piano,” and it helped the team win a number of major trophies, establishing Sundowns as one of the powerhouses of South African football.

In 1988, Standard Bank took possession of the club after it had been seized from Zola Mahobe by the bank. This led to Standard Bank gaining control of the club. The club was in danger of going out of business when Angelo and Natasha Tsichlas, who come from a football family, intervened with the bank and saved it. After that, they joined up with Abe Krok to establish a business and then bought out the entire club. Sundowns became the most successful team in South Africa while Tsichlas and Krok were in charge of the squad. During Angelo Tsichlas’ tenure as coach, the team brought home the very first NSL League Trophy.
