Top Rarest Dimes in Existence. Throughout history, coin collecting has been one of the most popular hobbies all over the world, particularly in the United States.

This holds true for rare coins of any denomination. The dimes that are included on this list have a value that ranges from tens of thousands to even millions of dollars, and they have not been sold in quite some time.

This list is current as of December 2020, and the information contained within it is as accurate as can be and will be updated as necessary.

The narrative goes that the reason the 1894 S Barber Dime is so hard to find is because the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint at the time, John Daggett, decided to strike only two dozen of these dimes for banking friends who had heard that there would be no dimes made that year.

The story has gained widespread circulation. The fact that so few Barber Dimes were made in San Francisco in 1894 contributes to the coin’s mystery, although no one knows for sure why there were so few of them struck there.

The 1894-S Barber Dime has consistently brought the highest price on the market, and its present value is close to two million dollars, which was the amount it brought at an auction in 2007.

After 1968, when the San Francisco Mint initially began taking over the striking of proof coins from the Philadelphia Mint, there was a change in the process that was used to create the proof dies, which resulted in a very uncommon error.

In Philadelphia, the proof dies were made, and then they were shipped to San Francisco, where an “S” was affixed to the regular P-mint die there. However, some dies were not used, which led to the production of incorrect coins.

The 1975 No. S. Roosevelt Dime Proofs are thought to have been discovered early on and melted down, with only a few managing to get away from the mint later on.
